Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemums, commonly known as mums or chrysanths, are a genus of about 40 species of flowering plants belonging to the aster family. They are native to subtropical and temperate regions of the Old World, particularly East Asia. These plants are highly regarded in the floral industry and are cultivated as fall-blooming ornamentals. Chrysanthemums come in various forms, including the popular florists’ chrysanthemum, which has over 100 cultivars such as button, pompon, daisy, and spider forms.
Chrysanthemums, known for their long vase life, can last from 2 to 4 weeks when stored at the correct temperature and cared for properly.
Flower Care:
Caring for chrysanthemum stems is important to extend their vase life and maintain their beauty. Here are some steps to follow:
- Trim the Stems: Cut the stems at an angle under water to prevent air from entering the stems and hindering water uptake.
- Strip off any leaves that would be below the waterline in the vase to prevent bacterial growth.
- Place the stems in tepid water immediately after cutting to prevent wilting.
- Use a clean vase to prevent bacterial growth. Fill it with fresh water and, if possible, add a floral preservative.
- Change the water every two days and re-cut the stems every few days to ensure the flowers can absorb water effectively.
- Keep the vase in a cool location out of direct sunlight and away from drafts or heat sources.
By following these care tips, your harvested chrysanthemum stems can stay fresh and vibrant for a longer period. Enjoy the beauty of your chrysanthemums.
